Luke Thill is a 13-year-old The Tiny Builder name Luke Thill who lives in Dubuque, Iowa. He lived the life of a normal boy until the day his summer break started. What he decided to do with the $1,500 he had with him during his summer break made him a headline on some of the most famous newspapers of America. Surely, read this amazing story through to the end…
The Tiny Builder
It all started when Luke Thill “wanted something to do during the summer” He had the obvious options of playing with his friends, going on a vacation or just relaxing at home watching movies and tv shows. But, he was a creative boy and decided to search YouTube for any DIY project to indulge in.
The Tiny House
Well, The Tiny Builder was delighted to find a video on YouTube which demonstrated the process of making a “Tiny House”, a campaign which encourages people to live in small houses equipped with all the necessities. Obviously, The Tiny Builder made up his mind to start building one on his own but he was no ordinary boy and wanted to do it in a unique way.
Can He Build It?
Luke took the wise decision of telling his parents what he was up to. He requested them to provide him with all the basic resources to build the house. The Tiny Builder knew that this was not going to be an easy task but he had his family’s full support. The only thing was that his parents wanted him to work in order to get his wishes fulfilled.
The Tiny Builder’s parents had raised their son while teaching him the importance of hard work. This was the reason that Luke mowed lawns, cleaned garages and did anything which could help him save money for the project. He made sure to use recycled and eco-friendly material in his house as far as possible. The news of Luke’s unique and creative project soon spread across the whole neighborhood.
Recycled and Reused
One thing that Luke made sure to incorporate in his house was to make use recycled and eco-friendly material. His work of cleaning the garage proved more than helpful to him. He could save money as well as collect lots of material from the garage which was deemed by the owners as useless. He went on to find even a discarded front door from one of his family friends.
Not Afraid to Ask for Help
Despite his courage and will to undertake a project like this, one cannot forget the fact that he was still a kid. There were many aspects of building a house like the electrical wiring which was dangerous for The Tiny Builder. So, he came up with the idea of working for people in exchange for their help in particular tasks.
Keeping ‘em Updated
The Tiny Builder and his project were the talks of the neighborhood. He would have dozens of people every day asking for the updates on the house. He was tired of telling the same thing to different people and felt distracted. This problem of his was also solved by YouTube, as he decided to start his own channel and give the latest news about his ambitious project.
After starting his YouTube channel, Luke’s popularity started to soar even high. His principal even called him to his office in order to praise him for what he was doing and tell him that he was in the newspapers making headlines. A reporter who happened to be a good friend of the principal wanted to take Luke’s interview. Now, back to from where it all started, the house!
Getting to Work
Through his hard work, Luke managed to gather a total of 1,500 for his project of making a tiny house. Now he had the constant eyes of the media on him, who wanted him to produce something amazing. Luke was now fully focused to start building the house, but for that, he had to face some challenges.
A Creative Countertop
It seemed that Luke took his DIY skills too far when his idea of making a beautiful countertop ended up being a disaster. He tried to use broken pieces of stained glass and glaze, but sadly when he applied glaze on the arranged pieces of glass it leaked through the mold. But, The Tiny Builder didn’t get disheartened and decided to work more hard.
As already told before Luke’s tiny house had become very popular. Now, it was the people from TinyFest Midwest who had contacted him. This is a festival which promoted people to build tiny houses. They asked Luke to give a speech on the occasion and he was confident enough to give it as he had recently received a Boy Scout merit badge for public speaking.
Is it Fully Livable?
Luke was very happy to see the how the house was coming up. His house had electricity and all sorts of basic stuff that a person needs to live. But, there were things which were not possible for Luke to incorporate into his house. Like, provision of water in his house and a bathroom, as the plumbing skills required would be too much for a 13-year-old. So, in the end, he had to satisfy with using the bathroom in his family’s house and yeah, there was no AC in his tiny house.
After Luke’s project completed he made a video tour of the house and uploaded it on YouTube for the people to see. This video currently has 7.5 million views and had gone viral at the time it was posted. Many people after seeing Luke’s video went on to say that he is an inspiration for all those people who have the desire to work on a project. Now, its time to look at how Luke’s efforts panned out in reality.
A Place To Call His Own
In the above images, one can see how wonderful the house looks from the outside. Well, now its time to go inside the house and see what Luke has come up with. The inside doesn’t disappoint at all as there is a kitchen, living area, dining area, and a separate bedroom. Luke has managed to give himself some privacy and has the bedroom in the upstairs loft.
Fit For a King
The kitchen has been wonderfully thought out and made in this house measuring a full 89 square feet. Despite the fact of it being a tiny house, one can see a small fridge, an electric stove top, and bottled water in the kitchen. To give a tiled look to the walls Luke has used floor linoleum. The mold which had earlier proved to be a disaster now came in handy as a storage area. There’s the provision of multiple power outlets too in the kitchen. Still, the living room is the best and will surely leave you awestruck!
A Leisurely Lounge
The Tiny Builder Luke aged only 13 now had a house of his own except the fact that he had to use his family’s house bathroom. The living room of his house is equipped with a couch and a TV, a perfect setting for a teenager. His parents allow him to sleep for two or three days a week in his tiny house. But, there was something shocking waiting for Luke.
The Tiny Builder Luke was now a star now. The news of his tiny house which had started from his neighborhood had now reached the front page of newspapers like Des Moines Register and the Telegraph Herald. People from all parts of America were coming to see this little genius’s masterpiece.
Inspiration and Admiration
The Tiny Builder Luke had a very important lesson for all of us. He had used everything recyclable and eco-friendly in his house which comprised around 75% of the house and hence made people ponder about the harmful impact of our activities on nature. He also reflected the advantages like fewer expenses and stress, of living in a small house. When asked about the motive behind building a tiny house he said: “ I wanted to have a house without a huge mortgage.”
It seems that uniqueness and creativity run in the blood of this family. As Luke’s older brother Cole has also made a decision of making a teardrop camper. A teardrop camper is like a small house on wheels. Like his brother Luke, Cole has also decided to use only recyclable and reusable material while making his project.
Luke plans to make an even bigger and more equipped house by using the knowledge he gained from his previous project. He has decided to sell his tiny house in order to gather funds for his new project. He’ll make sure that people watch each and every action of his while working on his project as it will be documented on YouTube.
Tiny Houses Everywhere
The Tiny House Movement is beginning to gather some followers. People are now realizing the objective of the initiative. There’s no standard size for a tiny house but anything under 500 square feet can be considered one. The average size of an American family has decreased over the years but the average size of the houses has been on an increase. This movement encourages people not to live in very costly and grand houses.
The Birth of the Movement
It is Architect and best-selling author Sarah Susanka who should be given the credit for starting this movement. She wrote a book on this matter in the year 1997 named The Not So Big House. Before her, many other authors have also presented their opinions through their books.
Why the Trend Caught On?
The reason for the increased attention on this issue is considered to be the rising housing prices around the world. It was designer Marianne Cusato who also played a big part by making 308 square feet shelters named ‘Katrina Cottages‘ after the hurricane Katrina hit in the year 2005. The idea of converting garages to tiny houses is also gaining popularity.
Life in a Tiny House
Yeah, there are some obvious drawbacks of living in a tiny house. There’s no space to roam freely and a lack of storage space. Apart from this, considering the fact that they are unusual in shape it is very difficult to find a building spot for them.
