When you’re in the latter years of your life, one wishes to live them out peacefully and in relative quietness. Unnecessary conflicts are the last things one wants to face when enjoying the years of retirement. But one Florida resident had to face unexpected changes when a new neighbor shifted into the neighborhood. And what he did next is a lesson in perseverance and the power of kind words!
Oliver Lynch had been living in his Osceola County, Florida neighborhood for almost a quarter of a century. He had expected to spend his twilight years enjoying the peace and quiet of his suburban neighborhood when something unexpected happened. With his 80th birthday around the corner, he came home one day to find some unexpected developments.
A Peaceful Man
The year 2015 marked the year he would complete 25 years in the Florida neighborhood. He had lived out a relatively peaceful and uneventful life so far in the locality and was friendly with everyone who lived there. Despite being his 79 years of age, the senior man was certainly no pushover.
A Spritely Man
In fact, Lynch wasn’t one to shy away from a conversation no matter how controversial the subject. He told the WFTV, “I just hate to be bullied.” Although he was only growing older with time, he still retained his values. “I have a little fight left in me, and I hate to see somebody bulldoze over me,” he said.
A New Neighbour
When a new neighbor shifted into the neighborhood, Lynch per usual was looking forward to welcoming the new presence into the neighborhood. He was building his house in the empty plot next to Lynch’s home, and Lynch hoped that they would become friends. But what this neighbor did obliterate all hopes of a friendship.
An Unexpected Development
Lynch came home one day to some unexpected developments. He returned home to find a small barricade of cinder blocks right down the middle of his driveway. The new neighbor had actually annexed a significant part of Lynch’s property and claimed it as his own.
No Choice But To Let It Be
But that was not all, the neighbor had actually cemented the bricks down for good measure. So there was no way that Lynch could remove these blockades that were encroaching on his own property. Lynch had no choice but to put up with the rude intrusion and let the blocks stay there – for the moment.
This hostile move came completely out of the blue and gave a substantial shock to the pensioner. After the initial shock had passed, another emotion – anger – took its place. The belligerent move was baffling, to say the least. “What’s he going to do with these extra few yards of concrete?” the exasperated homeowner questioned.
Records Don’t Lie
Lynch’s initial approach to solving the dispute was to have a talk with the neighbor. But any and every attempt at coming to an agreement fell on deaf ears. So when words failed, Lynch had to resort to legalities. He went about collecting official documents that stated he was allowed two adjacent 12-foot driveways on his property. But that was not going to be enough for the adamant neighbor.
Thinking Of A Solution
Even though an Osceola County official confirmed that Lynch’s records were accurate, there was nothing they could do. They advised Lynch to either, take the help of a surveyor to solidify the claims of his rightful property, or, take the matter to court.
Trying To Resolve The Issue
But Lynch was not a man of hasty decisions. Taking legal actions against his new neighbor was something he could not fathom doing. He still hoped that talking over the matter would help. But alas, the man could not be reasoned with. At last, Lynch had to consult the courts for his matter.
Lynch found the behavior of his neighbor at odds with his words. With claims of being part of the clergy, the neighbor’s behavior was far from it. He told the WFTV, “He said he was a minister or something like that. A G0d-fearing man. But I don’t think that’s very Christian-like.”
Left With No Choice
With failed negotiations about the property, Lynch felt he was left with little choice but to ask the help of the county. He would have to ask the assistance of an official to get back to reclaim his land. And as government procedures are often long and arduous, he had an ingenious idea to help him quicken up the process.
Calling The Media
Knowing he had a long road of procedures ahead of him, he thought to contact the local media. Upon hearing of his predicament, they agreed to help him. To uncover the whole story, they attempted several times to interview the neighbor in question, but to no avail.
Words Of Support
Although the report was inconclusive, the coverage of his story did earn him several supporters. One such supporter agreed with Lynch’s opinion, “This is not Christian-like at all.” They added, “You’re destroying what could have possibly been a great neighbor over a meaningless few feet of land.”
Unnecessarily Notorious Act
Another supporter added, “Way to make an impression on the neighbors. My thinking is that if this didn’t come up before you purchased the property, you are indeed being a bully to the elderly neighbor whose driveway was there before you.” The general consensus of the neighbor concluded that his behavior was uncalled for.
No Resolution Still
The spat between Lynch and his unyielding neighbor left the whole neighborhood abuzz. It got the local people talking, but ultimately, it brought no resolution to their issue. Days had passed, and the issue was nowhere near being resolved. So after a week, after the news report had aired, Lynch contacted WFTV once again.
A Step In The Right Direction
Lynch actually had good news this time around for WFTV. He revealed that he and his neighbor had actually made a breakthrough and were on the way to resolving the conflict. After a considerable amount of discussions, the pair had finally agreed to put their differences aside and remove the row of cinder blocks from Lynch’s driveway.
Just A Misunderstanding
Lynch also revealed that the neighbor had actually meant no harm. It seemed to be one big misunderstanding in the end. The old man was relieved, to say the least at this happy development. Thankfully for both of them, the conflict was finally behind them.
A Relieved Owner
The online community was overjoyed at the outcome. “Happy things work out for this elderly man,” one Facebook user wrote. “He said he doesn’t have much fight left in him. So I’m happy the neighbor let him have his whole driveway back. Praying this issue is finally resolved so this man can live his life in peace.”
All’s Well That Ends Well!
Lynch and his neighbor have happily moved on from the inconvenient skirmish. With an amiable neighbor next door finally, Lynch can look forward to living out the next 25 years happily in his Osceola neighborhood. Their story is just another reminder that perseverance and kind words can bridge all divides.
